Need Help On College Choices?

I’ve got it down to Grinnell College in Iowa and St. Bonaventure University near Buffalo, New York. I currently live in the suburbs of Chicago. Bonaventure is a solid school, but I just don’t think holds any comparison to Grinnell. Grinnell has amazing facilities and the intellectual atmosphere is amazing. I love the strong liberal arts emphasis and free curriculum, along with the overall campus life. However, my parents are totally opposed to going to Grinnell. I was accepted into a dual degree BS/DO program (med school) program that basically states I have a seat reserved for med school at Lake Erie School of Osteopathic Medicine. However, like I said the school is mediocre compared to Grinnell and I have to live in that corner of New York/Pennsylvania for the next eight years of my life.
I know I can have fun either way I go, but I’m afraid building a network in Buffalo and having it destroyed after eight years when I go back to Chicago (I was born and raised Midwest and I know I’ll definitely go back). I’m just so afraid I’ll have to go back to Chicago at age twenty six without any friends.
My dad struck a deal with me though. My passion is history and I think I would do very well in it as a undergrad student so I can set up a strong foundation for grad school. And I don’t know if I want to be a doctor right now. I loathe biology. But then again, a lot can change in three, four years. I want to be flexible at the one of the best undergraduate experiences there is to be had. But my dad says if I go to Grinnell, he’ll force me to major in some kind of science. If I go to Bonaventure, I can major in whatever I want, because of the guarantee into medical school (so I’ll pick history). I would be completely in favor of being disowned by my parents and supporting myself entirely through college, but Ginnell requires a parental contribution.
My parents are just so adamant that I’m going to be a bum with a history degree and that I can’t go anywhere after that. I wouldn’t be so against Bonaventure if it I knew that I wanted to be a doctor right here and now. So I’m in a tough position and I think it’s past negotiating with my parents. Please give your thoughts, along with your experiences in job markets and different degrees.
(Note: Expense of the colleges is not an issue, because Grinnell is way cheaper than Bonaventure.)

Just pick what looks more interesting for you. Also look into your major and pick by that way since you are in a standstill at the moment, other things to look for is what is around the campus and what is dorm life like.

I hate it when parents force their kids into majoring in a science/tech field because that’s where the parents want them to be successful rather than letting their kids choose their own path. Can you double major at Grinnell? Will they give you credit for AP exams? Can you do an independent study major there, combining biology and history so that you specialize in medical history (i.e., epidemics, antibiotics, infectious diseases, something like that)? If you choose Bonaventure, your parents will think they have you locked into a medical program and you’ll fight this battle all over again in two years if you decide medicine isn’t the course for you. Then again, perhaps you’ll be stronger then after two years away from home and more sure of what you want in life.
